Why?

For our spring break, my wife and I are planning on driving our electric vehicle, a Nissan LEAF, from the northern most point of Delaware to the southern most point. Along the way we will be stopping at the charging stations that are currently available on the “electric highway,” talking to people about electric vehicle usage, and blogging about our experience. Our goals for this trip are as follows:

1. Increase awareness of electric vehicle usage and help support an alternative to internal combustion engines (ICE)

2. Determine if there are any gaps in charging station locations

3. Promote economic development

4. Decrease air pollution

5. Save money on fuel costs

6. Promote tourism in Delaware

Why are we doing this? Well first, I love a challenge.  The challenge of trying to drive an electric car on an extended trip. Right now I use the car as a commuter car and only go on local trips, where I can make it home every night to charge my car. On this trip we will see the challenges faced by electric car drivers that want to go beyond the range of their car. The only way that we can have electric cars as the primary vehicle for families is to have an infrastructure set up to accommodate electric cars.  I think this trip will show whether Delaware is ready or not for electric cars. If it isn’t, I would like to help figure out how to get us there.

  1. Hi, my friend Janice told me about your site. I have been driving a Leaf since 2012. We would like to join in the effort to make the public aware of the need for charging stations. These cars are wonderful, but I am also limited in where I can go. Let’s talk about what we can do on a bigger scale to help make this paradigm shift.
